ROSES FOR MOSCOW REGION

roses in the suburbs

I will tell you about the experience of creating a rose garden at my dacha in Vnukovo, Moscow region. I became interested in roses 8 years ago, we had a dacha. I have studied various experiences related to caring for them – both from books and on the advice of experienced gardeners and good friends.

The choice of the place for the roses happened by accident – in front of the house in a sunny place, which at noon is slightly obscured by the bright shade of an apple tree. But both of these circumstances were very much liked by roses that do not burn all day in the sun, but like real beauties, they cover their faces and preserve the flowering time and the color itself. The flowerbed was slightly raised – by 20-30 cm, so that the water did not stagnate.

The choice of varieties has also changed. First, I bought imported flowers and brought them from the Baltic countries.

I gradually realized that roses that bloom multiple times over the summer are more attractive and better suited to a small garden like I have on 8 acres. I began to look closely at the local varieties grown in and around the Moscow region. Of course, they are more patient, better adapted to our conditions. And their beauty is also noble.

This question is very relevant not only for roses but also for most garden plants. Eliminate hay, straw right away – mice love them too much. But the bark of conifers as a mulch looks very nice. For example, in Europe, almost all flower beds are mulched in this way. However, it should be noted that the material is clean, well protected against all kinds of diseases and infections to which pine and spruce trees are susceptible.

The roses are grafted and rooted.

The former require special care, careful removal of growths and reliable shelter for the winter. But they will bloom in the first year.

Self-rooted roses are unpretentious and more hardy, require almost no maintenance, but bloom only in the 2-3rd year after planting.

Therefore, when arranging such a layer of mulching ourselves, we must remember to carefully process the bark, needles and cones. The latter, by the way, are a very interesting material for garden fantasies.

I feed 2-3 times a season. In addition to ready-made ones, I use green liquid fertilizers from dandelion, nettle, clover. I do not forget to spray the roses with preparations containing copper. Fall is a must, and if the summer is rainy, it is in the middle of the season.

One of the main problems with caring for roses is how to cover them for the winter. I am not going to talk about traditional methods (air drying) which suggest that you live next to the roses all the time and you can open them and cover them whenever the weather changes. Like many summer residents, I am leaving for the city in September. I come to the dacha only in emergencies – little snow, very warm winter, too early spring. Before the onset of frost (in September), I trim, dig the stem with sand and garden soil by 20-25 cm, then put a peg in each rose, to which I then (usually at the end of October) tie a spruce twig to the hut. A wise neighbor suggested her decision: cellophane is tied on top so that it looks like an umbrella.

Last winter, I decided to improve on this tried and true method. Spruce, which is sometimes unavailable, I replaced with non-woven fabric that I collected from various places as it is now often used as a packing material in the household. I bound the bushes with such material in two layers, not forgetting the cellophane umbrella.

To keep the snow and strengthen the snow cover between the roses, I spread the old branches of forest trees without bark. In the spring, at the end of March, I checked all the shelters.

In April, I started slowly digging the mounds and then gradually opening the roses. All 17 roses (bush, hybrid tea, floribunda) survived the winter safely. Only one, Polish selection, regenerated for a long time and gave the first leaves already in June. But already in July it bloomed profusely on strong shoots.

I think the experiment went well. But with a bit of the snowy winter we expect this year, the shelter will have to be strengthened. There is everything more – and an earthen mound, mulch, branches and non-woven “quilts”.
