EARLY FLOWERING ROSES (MAY, BEGINNING OF JUNE)

At the end of spring, florist forums are overwhelmed by “pink fever”: people in the southern regions boast photos of flowering rose bushes, other forum users eagerly await the appearance of the first buds and complain about the weather.

Of course, the flowering period of a rose largely depends on the climatic conditions, the safety of the buds, the general condition (health) of the bush, but there is another factor – the features of the variety. A meeting with the queen of flowers will bring you closer to the planting of early-flowering varieties.

Maigold – The very name of the Maiskoye Zoloto variety suggests that this rose blooms very early and its flowers have a delightful golden hue. Flowering buds elongated, pointed at the ends, have apricot-copper petals with a golden underside. Red stamens stand out in the center of the flower. In bright sun, the petals turn pale yellow, but in partial shade, a light color remains.

The leaves of this climbing rose are light green, have strongly serrated edges, prickly shoots, with thin long thorns.

JP Connell is a park variety, reaching a height of 1 m and reaching more or less the same width, the straight stems of the plant have no thorns.

Strong early flowering seems to surround the bush with a continuous creamy-yellow blanket, during the second wave single flowers form mainly at the tips of the branches. Large (up to 9 cm in diameter) double yellow flowers fade away over time, acquiring a lighter shade, but the middle petals retain their rich color. When fully developed, red stamens are visible in the center of the flower.

Cream Abundance belongs to the floribunda group. The dense, highly branched shrub is characterized by rather compact dimensions and reaches a height of no more than 80 cm.The large leaves have a rich dark green color, strong shoots keep the flowers well upright. Densely full flowers, 6-8 cm in diameter, are characterized by a very regular rounded shape, their overall background is cream, and towards the center the color is more intense, with a pale yellow tinge. In bright sunlight, the creamy petals often fade to almost white. Ebandance cream has a luxurious aroma that combines the scent of ripe apple and myrrh.

The disadvantage of this early variety can be attributed to its average rain resistance: after heavy rainfall, brown spots sometimes appear on the petals. However, such an annoying phenomenon is not observed every year, but only with prolonged rains, which usually occur closer to the end of summer and early fall.

Rumba (Rumba) – another early variety from the floribunda group, it is striking with its unusual color of flowers. Initially open buds show yellow flowers, over time the outer petals turn bright scarlet and then darken to a scarlet hue. This rose has no thorns and the flowers have a pleasant aroma comparable to that of fresh apples.

Piano (Piano) belongs to the hybrid group of tea roses. Compact, well-kept shrubs grow up to 60-120 cm in height with an average diameter of about 60 cm. Very often, adult plants grow vigorously and the bush takes a spherical shape.

Dense, dark green, glossy leaves are the perfect backdrop for bright red flowers, and the long, straight and vigorously flowering shoots are perfect for pruning.

The first buds on the bush can be seen in the second half of May, in early summer they slowly open to large peony flowers, the diameter of which sometimes reaches 12 cm. Even with the complete dissolution of the dense double flower, its core remains hidden by the petals, densely filling the middle part. Fruity notes are noticeable in the rich, sweet aroma of flowers.

Ritausma is a bush variety created by Latvian growers. She has high winter hardiness, many growers note her ability to winter in the middle lane without shelter.

When planting, it is important to take into account that Ritausma forms a very branchy, wide shrub more than 1.5 m tall with thorny shoots. Several plants planted side by side, without regular pruning, can form impenetrable thickets.

The leaves are light green, wrinkled, glossy, do not turn yellow and do not fall off until late fall. Flowers are delicate, as if luminous, porcelain-pink, moderately full, but thanks to the wavy edge of the petals they look quite lush. The cup-shaped flower, when fully developed, reaches 7-8 cm in diameter and shows its graceful heart.

Mary Magdalene is an English rose bred by its originator David Austin. The bush is about 1 m high and about the same width, with drooping shoots.

Small, dull, light green leaves, edges of young leaves with a red tinge. Densely double cup-shaped flowers reach 6-8 cm in diameter, half release pearly pink with a coral center, but quickly fade to a pale pink shade or take on an ivory color. They have a strong, rich aroma combining the scent of rose oil and myrrh.

Choosing roses for the garden The earliest varieties

A companion to the early roses

A common mistake of many flower growers is to focus only on the beautiful flowering plant when planning a future rose garden. However, it is worth thinking about the fact that in the fall the roses will have to be covered, which will require some space. And most importantly – in the spring, when the shelters are removed, the view of rose bushes will not be very presentable for some time. The simplest solution is to plant roses embedded in the plane of the lawn. But in this case, do not forget to regularly “bounce the edge”, cutting off the edge of the turf, which loses its transparency with a sharply sharpened shovel.

To keep the rose garden from looking depressing at the start of the season, plant spring bulbs next to the roses (but not under cover). It is best to choose daffodils and botanical tulips that do not require annual digging. And among companion plants with the same flowering periods as in early roses – irises, common catchment, cypress euphorbia, dairy-flowered peony.

ROSES NEED A LOT OF WATERING FOR EARLY FLOWERING

Roses have a deep root system, and the plant will be able to obtain moisture for a lifetime, even if left untreated, deluded by the fresh appearance of the leaves. But for good flowering, water may not be enough. In spring and summer, watering should be plentiful. Frequent and superficial wetting only the topsoil is not suitable: the water will still not reach the deep roots, and the plant will still miss it.

In addition, superficial roots are formed in the waterlogged upper layer, which will be regularly damaged by loosening.

In no case should the water for a rose be cold, the roots suck it out worse.

There is even a concept such as “physiological dryness” – there is a lot of moisture in the soil, but the plant cannot absorb it. But no water is still half the trouble, a rose can stand it. The main problem is that non-working roots in moist soil begin to rot and the plant begins to ache.
