How to prepare irises for wintering at home

The first step to success in development bearded irises (Germanic) – appropriate planting material.

I have been working with Shevkhiy Settarovna Saydaliyeva from the Krasnodar Territory for several years and I am very grateful to her for the wonderful planting material. But even good rhizomes can be ruined if they are not planted properly.

I have “Delenki” so that there is room for growth. I get a well a little wider than the rhizome and 2-3 cm deep, fill the ash-sand mixture at the bottom. I have a rhizome in such a way that the leaf blade does not cover it.

I pour the soil so that her back is sticking out of the ground. I water. The place must necessarily be sunny and dry. The sun is the best remedy for all types of root rot.

And ashes.

She and the drug and fertilizer can be powdered from the rhizome without regret, the irises will respond with a lush bloom. Waters them only during budding and flowering, after sufficient rainfall.

If it is rainy summer, the irises may hit the leaf lobe (heterosporiosis). Only after noticing the first symptoms of the disease, I spray the plants with a solution of copper-containing preparations according to the instructions.

And root rot is trimmed to living tissue and sprinkled with ash. In the sun, the wound dries up and shrinks. I feed in early spring during the leaf growth with mineral fertilizers for tuberous – and without organic.

For the winter, I cut off the leaves “on the cone” at a height of 10 cm and sprinkle the rhizome with dry leaves. Can you store your rhizomes outside the ground in winter?

It is argued in the literature and on the Internet that this is impossible. But my experience has proved otherwise. At the end of summer 2012 I had to post bearded irisesbut released them in October.

At that time, we already dropped the first snow and the frost began. I decided to refrigerate it in vegetable crates, wrapping it in several layers of newspaper. The irises were well kept, only slightly dry. In the spring, before planting at night, they were soaked in a rootstock solution.

Planted in the ground. For stability, it was rammed around the rhizome. They drank copiously with warm water. The soil periodically loosened.

Polila plants with cubic zirconia, making it easier for plants to cope with stress. All the irises were rooted, but the weather intervened – it was raining all June in our area. Unfortunately, three out of twenty rhizomes have died. But in fact, I managed to keep most of the plants – some even happy with flowering.

N. Belyakova,

Expert opinion

Of course, irises do not store this, but luckily in your case, wintering the planting material was successful.

Before planting, carefully inspect the pieces.

If they shrink drastically, they land in the ground and quietly “solder”. If there are small spots on the feces, soft formations (signs of fading), then treat them with fungicides (according to the instructions). When planting, only the roots are sprinkled with earth, the rhizomes remain above the ground. To water moderately.
